What would Paris look like if sufficiency shaped its policies? Join us as international student teams present bold, research-based proposals for rethinking digitalization, food, trade, and urban life through the lens of doing better with less.
How can sufficiency shape the future of Paris?
As climate and social pressures mount, the idea of “doing more with less” is gaining ground. Sufficiency challenges our assumptions about growth and consumption, pushing us to rethink how cities use resources – and for whose benefit.
After five months of collaborative research, international student teams will showcase their proposals for how the City of Paris could integrate sufficiency principles into key policy areas. Building on global case studies and field visits, each group addresses a domain where rethinking resource dependency is both necessary and possible: digitalization, food systems, trade, and urban living. Introduced by IPCC author Dr. Yamina Saheb, this event is an opportunity to explore fresh narratives and actionable ideas for transitioning toward a fairer and more sustainable city. The session will wrap-up with a collective discussion open to policymakers, researchers, and citizens.

Comment la sobriété peut-elle façonner l’avenir de Paris ?
Face aux urgences climatiques et sociales, l’idée de « faire mieux avec moins » gagne du terrain. La sobriété interroge nos habitudes de croissance et de consommation, et nous invite à repenser l’usage des ressources en ville.
Après cinq mois de recherche collaborative, des équipes d’étudiant.e.s internationaux présenteront leurs propositions sur la manière dont la Ville de Paris pourrait intégrer les principes de la sobriété dans des domaines clés de l’action publique. S’appuyant sur des études de cas internationales et des visites de terrain, chaque groupe abordera un secteur où repenser notre dépendance aux ressources est à la fois nécessaire et possible : le numérique, l’alimentation, le commerce et les modes de vie urbains. Introduit par la chercheuse et autrice du GIEC Dr Yamina Saheb, cet événement sera l’occasion d’explorer de nouveaux récits et des pistes concrètes pour une transition vers une ville plus juste et plus durable. La session se clôturera par une discussion collective ouverte aux décideur.euse.s public.que.s, chercheur.euse.s et citoyen.ne.s.

This event is co-organized by the CARE Program at Sciences Po Paris and the World Sufficiency Lab. The CARE (Climate Adaptation, Resilience and Empowerment) is an international program connecting students and researchers across France and Canada to build bold, inclusive climate action and leadership. With a focus on innovation, collaboration, and knowledge exchange, CARE’s objective is to develop practical solutions for global sustainability challenges. The World Sufficiency Lab is dedicated to integrating sufficiency into climate policies and practices. By advancing research, capacity building, and policy advocacy, the lab’s mission is to promote sufficiency as a key strategy in achieving a sustainable future for all.
Together, CARE and the World Sufficiency Lab have been collaborating to develop the CARE-WSL Sufficiency Project, where international student groups systematically review policies and practices of sufficiency across various policy domains. These students will come together in Paris for the first Sufficiency Summer School, held at Sciences Po between 2-7 June 2025, where they will apply their findings to the case study of the city of Paris.
